Lot 1841
1910 $2.50 Indian. NGC graded Proof 65. Purportedly 682 made; many believe this figure is a typographical error, as Proofs of this date are no less rare than those of 1909. Collector interest in these was never very high due to their initial cost (a not inconsiderable sum in those days), and as a result, very few are to be found in gem condition. Hence, this is clearly among of an exclusive group which is among the handsomest known of the date, regardless of its exact numerical grade. No signs of handling marks and the surfaces are quite well preserved. The only faint disturbance would be a couple of nearly invisible hairlines, mostly in out of the way locations. Hard searching may find a duplicate Proof 65, but expect to find a better one and you'll be out there in the bourse floor 24 hours a day for weeks on end, as this is a really beautiful, charming coin. Perfectly struck; a visual masterpiece of Bella Lyon Pratt's "recessed relief" design as it is officially termed by the Mint. Pop 26; 41 finer.
Estimated Value $17,000 - 19,000.

Lot 1842
1911-D $2.50 Indian. NGC graded MS-65. Well struck. Lightly toned. Popular key date. 55,680 coins minted. Mint mark very strong. Strictly Gem quality and very frosty. Gold specialists recognize the importance of the 1911-D Quarter Eagle rarity for what it is, the key impediment to assembling a 15-piece Indian $2.50 set. The condition rarity of this issue is beyond belief, and the obvious fact that the higher the Mint State rating the more challenging it becomes makes this date almost unapproachable in Gem condition. The acquisition of a Mint State 65 1911-D not only requires a substantial outlay, but the patience of Job as well.

Offered here is a truly beautiful frosty Mint State 65. The fields are nearly flawless with only the most minute abrasions visible, and these only with the aid of a lens. The strike details are fully brought up as well, including the important mintmark. A landmark offering for the specialist. (NGC holder 1500607-001) Pop 60; 2 finer in 66.
Estimated Value $75,000 - 80,000.

Lot 1843
1911-D $2.50 Indian. PCGS graded MS-64. Nicely toned. Dancing satin to frosted luster careens off the choice surfaces of this attractively preserved Indian quarter eagle. A blend of shades can be seen on both sides. The strike is everywhere sharp on the reverse, with the design elements also nicely formed on the Indian's war bonnet and ruffled feather band.

When 21st Century collectors introduce the subject of the 1911-D quarter eagle into the discussion, what usually gets focused on is this coin's impressively low mintage (55,850 pieces), followed closely by talk about its absolute rarity. What is never overlooked, however, is its condition rarity in choice Mint condition, beyond the obvious fact that the higher the Mint State rating the more difficult it becomes to find one. As a choice MS64, acquisition of a 1911-D not only requires a substantial outlay, but a great deal of patience as well. Pop 267; 18 finer; 14 in 65; 4 in 66. (PCGS # 7943) .

Lot 1844
1911-D $2.50 Indian. NGC graded MS-64. Lightly toned. This is a shimmering, gold-colored beauty, a jewel in the eyes of just about every connoisseur of Indian head quarter eagles. The bold strike is impressive for the series, but more so for the 1911-D date, and both sides are typically smooth, choice, lustrous for the grade. 55,680 coins minted. Pop 329; 62 finer.
Estimated Value $28,000 - 30,000.

1911-D $2.50 Indian. KEY DATE 1911-D MINT STATE 63. PCGS graded MS-63. Well struck and nicely toned. A couple of tiny round dot-sized marks on the Indian's cheek. Lustrous and generally well struck, or as well struck as can be for a typically softish Denver mint quarter eagle. The color is resplendent dusky gold with pale coppery orange overlay of natural toning. Key date in the set; always a challenge in choice Mint State 63 or better. 55,680 coins minted (PCGS # 7943) .

1911-D $2.50 Indian. PCGS graded MS-62. Nicely toned. Popular key date. This example, illustrative of the choice quality only occasionally seen in its grade class, has iridescent orange gold surfaces and no spotting or heavy handling marks. Another thing, this too, displays an above-average strike on the headdress feathers and other main devices for 1911-D, which is unusual for the date, and not even a trace of soft detail at the bold mintmark. 55,680 coins minted (PCGS # 7943) .

1911-D $2.50 Indian. PCGS graded AU-58. Popular key date. Nice for the grade. With flattering mint luster and a minimum number of wispy abrasions, this lightly toned-gold coin is every bit the 58-quality coin. Possessed of a much finer strike than is typically found for '11-D, with perhaps only slight loss of detail in the lower feather ends and on some of the ruffled edge of the headdress (PCGS # 7943) .

1911-D $2.50 Indian. PCGS graded AU-55. Lightly toned on both sides. The "D" mint mark is weak. Popular key date. 55,680 coins minted. Much of the original luster still evident with lovely orange-gold color, the surfaces are free of bothersome marks, and this goes for the Indian's important face and cheek areas (PCGS # 7943) .

1913 $2.50 Indian. PCGS graded Proof 65. A very choice example. A notable and rare coin in this grade. Remember that of the few coins that were minted in Proof, an unknown quantity were spent during the Depression. Only a few can match the quality here. On the obverse, we see no flaw or signs of contact, and warm golden-orange color that draws you in to it like it was magnetic. On the reverse, the identical rich matte gold color and without signs of spotting or mishandling. An opportunity for the specialist. 165 proofs minted. Pop 13; 7 finer in 66. (PCGS # 7962) .

1929 $2.50 Indian. NGC graded MS-63. Lovely golden toning this coin too has deep vivid shades of "old gold" from never having been cleaned. A beautiful example of the rare last year of issue, and a key date.

The 1929 Half Eagle is a perfect example where the original mintage is a misleading indicator of how truly scarce a coin is. Mintage was listed as 662,000; however, the great bulk of these must have stayed with the Treasury or been locked in bank vaults, as only a few hundred remain. Most are believed to have been melted in 1934 and later years after the government "nationalized" (seized) the gold coins held in trust for the American public and recast them into 400-ounce gold ingots. Few collectors of the day realized the consequence of this seizure and so only the brightest retained any 1929 Half Eagles for their collections.
Estimated Value $725 - 800.
